The Statue of Freedom was a major character in The Monument Mythos series, where its original purpose as a statue atop the United States Capitol was subverted by Thomas Crawford, driven by his anti-American sentiments.

Freedom viewed its actions as part of a grander purpose, interpreting its violent deeds as acts of liberation rather than mere brutality. By skinning its victims and wearing their hides, Freedom believed it honored them. Additionally, it longed for acceptance and saw this practice as a means to integrate into a community.

In 1858, Thomas U. Walter tasked Montgomery Meigs with selecting an artist to design and construct a statue titled "Freedom" for the Capitol dome. Meigs contacted Thomas Crawford, who accepted the commission and submitted three design proposals. Meigs chose the third design but requested that Crawford remove the cap, to which Crawford readily agreed.

As Crawford sculpted the statue, he infused the plaster model with his soul, giving it life at the expense of his own physical existence.

On April 17, the Statue of Freedom was disassembled. Its components were packed into crates and loaded onto the Monarca, which then set sail for Gibraltar. During the week-long voyage, some parts of the statue broke free and punctured the ship's hull.

On the morning of April 29, customs officials discovered that the crates aboard the Monarca had been emptied. At that same time, Freedom reformed away from the dock, carrying Nina Crawford, who had hidden inside one of the crates. The statue ascended the Rock of Gibraltar with tremendous speed, cutting through trees and leaving a trail of flames in its wake. Upon reaching a deep crevice leading to an offshoot of St. Michael's Cave, Freedom leaped down and spent several hours sharpening its sword. Once the blade was ready, Freedom peeled away Nina's skin and donned it, merging their souls into one.

Meanwhile, Henry Morgan received numerous reports of a powerful force racing up the Rock. Alarmed by this surge of information, he assembled thirteen officers to investigate. Deep within the crevice, they discovered a statue wearing a hollowed torso, surrounded by the flattened remnants of a body. After extracting the statue from the cave, the officers transported it back to port.

Upon their arrival, Freedom erupted into a violent rampage, resulting in over twenty-five deaths and leaving only a handful of survivors. Exhausted from the conflict, Freedom returned to the Monarca and lay down to regain its strength. The ship quickly set sail, making a brief stop in Bermuda before ultimately arriving in New York.

The United States of America government then entrusted Phillip Reed with the responsibility of guiding the project to completion. When the project was finally finished, only the lifeless form of Freedom remained.

Awakening of Freedom

On January 6, 1977, the Anti-Dean Association launches an assault on the Capitol, resulting in gunfire that topples Freedom from its perch atop the building. After years of dormancy, the statue awakens,[1] leading to the loss of over 150 lives. In the aftermath, various organizations seek to acquire Freedom. However, due to its anomalous nature, the U.S. government, in collaboration with the Department of the Interior, decides to relocate the statue to the Grand Canyon.

Once relocated, Freedom is designated as a Giza Guardian, tasked with protecting restricted areas from trespassers and eliminating individuals associated with the ADA, as well as those who become overly curious about the operations of Maize Machines. Among those targeted is Maya Wray Arnoldson, a member of the Anti-Device Association

The Great Divison

On February 22, 2022, the Department of Technology devises a plan to neutralize the Air Force One Angel through a mission known as "Operation Thunderbird," which involves Freedom. To lure the statue into a trap, the Department deploys two androids as bait. As Freedom approaches, a series of False Children activate, releasing Giza Gas into the area. This gas quickly solidifies into Giza Glass, temporarily ensnaring Freedom. The Department then transports this makeshift prison to the Babylon Forest, where the Angel resides.

Freedom breaks free from its confinement and charges at the Angel with its sword. In retaliation, the Angel unleashes a powerful beam of plasma. Although Freedom attempts to deflect the beam, the sword inadvertently amplifies the plasma to catastrophic levels. This amplification causes the Earth to crack open, unleashing the Horned Serpent. This event is later referred to by the remaining sentient life as the "Great Division."
